I read an article in the Toronto Star indicating that Bill Clinton is the most well-liked president of the last quarter-century. I would probably say “ever” and here’s why: Does anyone really know what George Washington or Abraham Lincoln were really like? Bill Clinton has lived and led through intense media scrutiny and the unrelenting spotlight, through extreme debt and extreme wealth, and through emotional highs and lows. He has, as one of my favourite movies famously quoted, “crawled through a river of sh– and came out clean on the other side.”
It has been close to 10 years since I met President Clinton and I remember it like it was yesterday. Through the subsequent years of covering his events and seeing him hold court backstage, my opinion of him has only improved. Charles always says that he saw Bill Clinton on TV as Governor of Arkansas back in 1990 and immediately knew that he would make a great President. I would believe it.
